The Realm of Low Expectations
February 20, 2026
As a startup investor, I've seen many careers develop over the last 20 years and one of the worst patterns I see is: low expectations.
Great companies like Twitter and Slack, started out with completely different ideas. If you need to pivot, here’s how to do it right:
Choose a large market that you really care about. This makes it a lot easier to make money and survive the tough times.
Even though you put a lot of time into it, you can’t let your old work guide the new idea, as it severely limits what you might work on. Before they pivoted, Slack was a gaming company.
Do tons and tons of customer interviews before settling on an idea. If this isn’t your first attempt, you really need to make sure there’s demand.
Best of luck out there
