A Better Way to Organize Gmail

A Better Way to Organize Gmail

I started using Gmail ~20 years ago, back then it was a huge leap forward over Yahoo and Hotmail. Google gave you tons of space, and the speed was impressive. But 2 decades later, you can still only sort your inbox by time received.

Using Gmail every day and having access to multiple AI coding agents meant it was worth a shot at fixing this myself. I used ChatGPT o1 and after a couple of hours working together, we produced a working Firefox extension that reorders your Gmail inbox by Star Color.

I use 3 levels of importance: Purple (1), Red (2), and Yellow (3), with uncategorized and unread messages remaining at the top. The extension uses javascript to modify the visual layout of Gmail so no login is required, nor will it edit anything in your inbox.

You can see all the source code here and download the file to install on Firefox here (click “download raw file” on the right).

I use it every day. Please let me know if you give it a try and feel free to edit the code to your own organization style: a coding agent can help!
